Huaministic Perspective
Theorist: Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow.
Focus:This perspective has four parts: personal responsibility, focus on growth, focus on the present, and focus on the individual. Abraham Maslow is famous for his hierarchy of needs.
In order to reach self-actualization a person must first have all of the previous needs met. As each need is met the person grows and reaches the highest level of fullfillment.
Carl Rogers discussed how one views him or herself plays a role in reaching their self-actualization. Often times people distort reality to avoid reality.
Strengths of theory: The strengh of this theory is that it shows a map to follow to help someone grow. I feel this is a straightforward approach to understanding both human and personality developmebt.
Weakness of theory: A weakness of this theory is that it does not take into account ones nature or experiences. It is more a check list of this is what people need to achieve or otherwise they will not be happy. It does not discuss how events interfer with achieving self-actualization.
Personal example: A personal example of this is from my own childhood. My father is not my biological father but he raised me with love and belonging that he allowed me to build my self-esteem and have an opportunity to reach self-actualization. Many people who are raised by a parent who is not biogically related do not always feel that love and it can cause self-efficacy, esteem, and identity issues.
